Indigenous Science

Goal: Create a science lesson plan that includes and respects Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Traditional Ecological Knowledge

how do I plan on learning?

I plan on learning by talking with the science teachers at Esquimalt High School, watching videos, and reading articles about how to include Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Traditional Ecological knowledge in science. Additionally, I will need to have a better understanding of the science curriculum to know which topics are best suited to work alongside Traditional Ecological Knowledge.

how will I know I’ve succeeded?

I will know I have succeeded when I have a completed lesson plan for a science course that includes and respects Traditional Ecological Knowledge.

what is my schedule to achieve this goal?
  1. I will spend the next week (Sept 15th – 22nd) gathering resources about Traditional Ecological Knowledge.
  2. The following week (Sept 22nd – 29th) I will find science topics within the science curriculum that relate to Traditional Ecological Knowledge. I will need to delve deeper into the science curriculum for this step which might take an extra blog post.
  3. The week of Sept 29th – Oct 6th I will compile and summarize the information I have gathered. This will likely be multiple blog posts.
  4. The week of Oct 6th – Oct 13th I will create practice problems for the lesson plan.
  5. The week of Oct 13th – 20th I will create a rough lesson plan.
  6. The week of Oct 20th – 27th I will create my good lesson plan.

  1. I think it is really good idea for you to have set a timeline. I wish I had been doing this my self. Keeping your self on track can be a really difficult thing to do. This will be an important skill as a teacher as your schedule will be dictated by your students not how you feel at the time.

I think you will great however as I have seen how you have kept on top of everything throughout the semester. I think your lesson plan of finding an lesson plan that respects indigenous ways of knowing is so important because we have to be teaching this as part of the BC curriculum anyway. I look forward to reading the rest of your blog posts and hopefully learning a whole lot that I can apply to my own teaching one day!

  2. Hi Sarah! As someone who is also going to be teaching high school science I’m very curious about this topic. I’m truly excited to read through the rest of you’re posts to hopefully gain some insight into how I too can respectfully include Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Traditional Ecological Knowledge into my science lessons.

  3. This is a really interesting idea! I’m sure this was a challenging project for you but it is so important, and it will definitely pay off in your classes. Good for you, for making a schedule – setting yourself up for success!!
